Late Summer News 2020
Hello Dear Friends,
We write to share what we’re doing for the trees in our lives. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit resource for tree-related community service in Provincetown. Protection of our community trees, and planting more of them, is our mission. Thank you, all, for your enthusiasm for our work and your support of our efforts! We are grateful that Provincetown has been such a safe place during Covid 19 and that we’ve been able to do so much given the public restrictions.
Planting Community Trees
We’re thrilled to report that, so far, we’ve planted 16 trees in Provincetown – 12 of them in the past year. Most of these trees are gifts we’ve made to the Town for planting in places like the Provincetown School front yard and playground, the Conservation Commission’s B-St Community Garden, across from the Post Office, and in the yard of a Provincetown Housing Authority property. Others have been gifts to local nonprofits, including The Commons, The Provincetown Theater, and the Fine Arts Work Center. We’ve planted several American elms – a variety called the “Princeton” elm that is resistant to Dutch elm disease – in an effort to bring this magnificent shade tree back to our streets! The Princeton elms we planted in front of The Commons transform the site and are a particular reminder that some of the most wondrous things alive are tall and green. We’ve also planted Eastern red cedars, Black tupelos, and October Glory maples (all native species) and a Star magnolia with its large, showy white flowers to welcome each spring to Fishburne Court.

Launching Memorial Tree Project
Oversight of memorial trees in Provincetown has passed from the Public Landscape Committee to the Tree Warden. Trees Provincetown has offered its services to the Tree Warden, and is getting ready to launch a memorial tree project next Spring for the benefit of the community. Stay tuned, and tell your friends who have a loved one they want to honor – person or pet! The project will have two components: Adopting an existing tree, and planting a new tree. Contributions from donors who wish to participate will cover the costs.

The simple act of caring for trees improves life on earth and in this town. It also takes a stance on climate change and what we can do about it. We’re excited to be doing this in our community, and thank you again for your interest and support!
